Before you click “apply,” “join group,” or “register now,” you need a quick filter that helps you separate real opportunities from scams.
These are the core signs that an online job, whether survey, data entry, or VA , is fake.
Think of this as your scam detector checklist:
1. They Ask You to Pay First – This is the #1 Sign of a Fake
No legitimate online job requires:
- Training fee
- Registration fee
- Manual fee
- Activation fee
- Onboarding fee
- Software fee
If money must leave your hand before money enters your hand, it is a scam.
Real companies pay YOU , not the other way around.
2. The Pay is Unrealistic for the Work Involved
Scammers advertise pay that doesn’t make sense.

“₦50,000 daily answering surveys”
“₦10k per page typed”
“₦450k monthly VA role, no interview needed”
Online work pays – but not in miracles.
If the job sounds too easy for the money promised, it’s fake.
3. The Recruiter Only Operates Through WhatsApp or Telegram
Legit companies usually have:
- A website
- An email
- A LinkedIn page
- Zoom/Google Meet interviews
Scam jobs hide on WhatsApp because it’s private, untraceable, and easy to delete.
If everything – application, interview, hiring, “training” – happens ONLY on WhatsApp or Telegram…
RUN.
4. No Online Presence or Verifiable Information
Scams rely on being untraceable.
Signs a job is fake:

Scams use tactics like:

- “Training starts in 10 minutes!”
- “Offer expires tonight!”
Real companies don’t pressure you like you are buying suya.
They allow you to ask questions and take your time.
8. Zero Screening Process
Every real online job, even beginner roles, has some form of screening.
Legit employers may ask for:
- A short interview
- A small test
- A sample task
- A typing speed check
- A voice or communication check
If someone hires you instantly without verifying anything, it’s because they’re not really hiring.
They’re collecting.
9. Payment Channels Are Suspicious
Fake jobs often ask for or offer payment through:
- Gift cards
- Crypto (only)
- Opay/PalmPay (from untraceable accounts)
- Manual transfers with no proof
- Nigeria-only wallets for “international jobs”
Real online jobs use:
- PayPal
- Payoneer
- Wise
- Bank transfer
- Upwork/Fiverr contract payments
If the payment method sounds strange for the type of job, be careful.
10. No Testimonials, No Proof, No Track Record
Every legitimate platform has:
- Reviews
- Ratings
- Payment proofs
- Social presence
- Online mentions
Scam pages hide comments, block DMs, or create fresh accounts daily.
If nobody has heard of them before, don’t let you be the first victim.
